There’s something special about an orange that was grown and harvested just down the road, or a cucumber that was picked just yesterday.

While the fruits and veggies are delicious on their own, though, the quality of this fresh, local produce really shines when you use it as part of a bigger recipe in the kitchen.

TODAY Show guest chef Jocelyn Delk Adams just did a segment on farmers market finds and the yummy things you can bake with them. She opted to use blueberries, but said that you could easily swap the blueberries out for another berry that was in season. Adams made two dishes: a Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream and Blueberry Crumble Bars.

The  crumble bars, in particular, sounded absolutely divine, and Adams says they’re ‘like pie without the work,’ which sounds like a great deal to me. You can watch the video of Adams putting them together on the TODAY Show website, or just get the recipe here.

And, if you have an itch to get into the kitchen and make these delicious-sounding goodies, by all means, stop by the August market to get some fresh, local, in-season berries. Then send us pictures of your handiwork!

There’s something special about a tomato you know was just picked from somewhere in your own back yard, and there’s definitely something to be said for getting your hands on produce that’s in season. The nutrition and taste benefits can’t be beat.

With the huge variety of produce available at markets these days, how do you know what’s in season? Plus, seasonal availability here in Florida is going to be different than it would be somewhere like North Carolina or Texas.

Our friends at PickYourOwn.org have put together a handy chart of Florida crop availability to help you keep track of it all. The green boxes to the right of each type of produce indicate which months that items is in season. Print that out, and you’ll even have a handy reference chart to help you dream up meals and recipes using in-season foods. Sounds delicious, right?

Maybe just be sure to invite some of your friends from the market over for dinner after you pick up your next batch of locally grown produce.

Our next market is Saturday, August 13, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 11924 San Jose Boulevard. See you there!
